VCA Basic or VOL: What’s the Difference?

You are looking for vca basic or vol difference — which diploma do you need as an operational employee, and when do you choose VOL-VCA? In the Netherlands, SSVV organizes the exams. In short:

Short answer:

  • B-VCA (VCA Basic): for operational employees — exam 40 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes
  • VOL-VCA: for operational managers (and some self-employed individuals as subcontractors) — exam 60 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes
  • VIL-VCU: separate diploma for intermediaries / management in temporary employment or secondment — also 60/60
  • Both VCA diplomas are valid for 10 years and are listed in the Central Diploma Register (CDR)

For temporary employment/secondment: look at VIL-VCU (same exam scope as VOL: 60 questions / 60 min), not at VOL-VCA. See SSVV’s explanation on the VOL-VCA page.

When to Choose VCA Basic (B-VCA)?

B-VCA (Basic Safety VCA) is the diploma you usually need when you start working as an operational employee for a contractor. You demonstrate that you can work safely and healthily according to the basic knowledge from the VCA final and assessment terms.

Practically:

  1. You work on the floor / in execution (not in management)
  2. Client or employer requires a valid B-VCA
  3. You want to obtain the basic first before possibly progressing to VOL

Exam: 40 multiple-choice questions, 60 minutes, language level A2. You will know immediately after whether you have passed. More about the structure: How many questions VCA Basic?.

Do you have difficulty reading? For B-VCA, there is a reading exam (the screen reads aloud). An exam in another language is also possible — often at a slightly higher cost; details on SSVV exams.

When to Choose VOL-VCA?

VOL-VCA stands for Safety for Operational Managers VCA. SSVV: intended for operational managers and for self-employed individuals working as subcontractors at a VCA-certified company (both permanent and temporary employees).

You demonstrate that you can apply VGM knowledge for yourself and for the people you manage — legislation and regulations, recognizing and preventing dangerous situations, being a point of contact for the client and team.

Exam: 60 multiple-choice questions, 60 minutes, language level B1. This is more challenging than Basic — so train on 60/60, not on a Basic test. Handy: VCA VOL exam simulation.

Note (SSVV):

  • Self-employed individuals you rent out as temporary employees (effort obligation): B-VCA is generally sufficient — VOL is not necessarily required
  • Intermediary or management at a temporary employment agency: choose VIL-VCU, not VOL-VCA

Which Diploma Suits You? Decision Tree

  1. Do you mainly work operationally? → start with B-VCA
  2. Do you provide operational management (team, project, supervision on the floor)? → VOL-VCA
  3. Temporary employment / secondment / intermediary? → VIL-VCU
  4. Unsure? → ask your employer or client what they require; then check a recognized exam center

Sometimes an employer wants operational employees to take VOL directly. That is allowed — but train on 60 questions and B1 language. Conversely: taking VOL “just in case” without a management role is often overkill if Basic is sufficient.

Exam, Costs, and Validity (Same Rules)

Whether you take Basic or VOL: the frameworks of SSVV are comparable.

  • Standalone exam: approximately 100 euros (SSVV guideline); usually included in training — see Costs VCA exam
  • Diploma: valid for 10 years — see How long is VCA valid?
  • Registration: after passing in the CDR via the exam center
  • Practice exam: practicing ≠ official diploma

If you fail? You may retake it through the exam center. Tips: VCA resit.

Smart Practice: Match Your Level

The biggest risk is practicing at the wrong level: training Basic questions while doing VOL (or vice versa).

  1. Choose your diploma with employer/client
  2. Timed practice — 40/60 or 60/60
  3. Repeat weak themes — see VCA summary
  4. Review exam regulations via trainer or center
  5. Register at an SSVV-recognized exam center

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between VCA Basic and VOL?

B-VCA is for operational work (40 questions / 60 min, A2). VOL-VCA is for operational management (60 questions / 60 min, B1). Both are valid for 10 years via SSVV-recognized centers (SSVV).

Is VOL-VCA “higher” than Basic?

VOL covers more material and a management role (60 questions, B1). It is not a “Basic plus badge” — choose what your role requires.

Do I need VOL as a self-employed person?

Not always. If you rent yourself out as a temporary employee, B-VCA is generally sufficient according to SSVV. VOL may be required as a subcontractor at a VCA company — check your assignment.

What is VIL-VCU then?

Diploma for intermediaries and managers in temporary employment/secondment (VCU). Exam scope is the same as VOL: 60/60. It does not replace VOL for “regular” contractor management.

Can I do Basic work with VOL?

A valid VOL diploma demonstrates VCA knowledge at the management level. Whether a client accepts VOL instead of Basic depends on their requirement — ask them. Always train for the exam you are actually booking.

Does Proefexamen VCA issue an official diploma?

No. Only SSVV-recognized exam centers do. We help you practice — see demo or VCA exam practice.

What if I booked the wrong exam?

Contact your exam center or trainer before the session. Changing levels is sometimes possible; then train again on the correct number of questions.
