Is the VCA Exam Difficult? Honest Answers + Tips

Is the VCA Exam Difficult? Here’s How to Make It Easier for Yourself

You have your VCA exam coming up and are wondering: is the VCA exam difficult? Honest answer: the material is manageable, but the exam is not a formality. Those who rely solely on their intuition or practical experience are often surprised by the question format, language level, or time pressure. The good news: these are exactly the things you can train for.

Short answer:

  • B-VCA (Basic): 40 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes, language level A2 (1F)
  • VOL-VCA and VIL-VCU: 60 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes, language level B1 (2F) — so more material and less time per question
  • The exam is usually a screen exam on a computer, laptop, or tablet; you hear immediately after completion whether you have passed
  • Struggling with reading? For B-VCA, there is a reading exam; an oral exam is not possible
  • What makes it "difficult": reading long questions, technical terms, and ambiguous answers — all of which can be practiced

Is a VCA Exam Difficult? The Honest Answer

Whether you find the VCA exam difficult depends less on your intelligence and more on three things:

  1. How well you read Dutch. The questions are written at a fixed language level. If you take a long time to understand a sentence, that cuts into your time.
  2. Whether you know the concepts. Words like RI&E, LMRA, work permit, PPE, or TRA should be recognized immediately. Those who only partially know them will hesitate.
  3. Whether you are familiar with the exam format. Multiple-choice questions with two almost-correct answers are a skill in themselves.

Many people with years of experience on the construction site think the exam will go well "on its own." But the exam tests the rules and theory as they are stated in the final and testing terms — not "how we always do it here." That often makes the difference between passing and failing.

What Makes the VCA Exam Challenging?

1. Time Pressure (Especially with VOL-VCA)

For B-VCA, you have 60 minutes for 40 questions: an average of one and a half minutes per question. For VOL-VCA and VIL-VCU, there are 60 questions in 60 minutes: one minute per question. That feels spacious until you encounter a few long case questions. You can read more about the structure in How Many Questions in VCA Basic? and the VCA VOL Exam Simulation.

2. Language and Technical Terms

SSVV uses language level A2 (1F) for B-VCA and level B1 (2F) for VOL-VCA and VIL-VCU. Are you unsure about your language level? SSVV refers to a free Basic Meter that lets you know within 15 minutes whether extra language lessons are advisable. Additionally, there is an official VCA-Dutch terminology list in multiple languages — invaluable if Dutch is not your first language.

3. Ambiguous Answers

In multiple-choice questions, there are often two answers that are "somewhat correct." The exam seeks the answer that fits the rules best. Therefore, always read the entire question, pay attention to words like first, always, not, and the most, and only then choose.

4. Practicing at the Wrong Level

Those who practice for B-VCA while needing VOL-VCA underestimate the amount of material. Unsure which diploma you need? First read VCA Basic or VOL Difference.

Is the VCA Basic Exam Difficult or the VOL Exam Difficult?

B-VCA (Basic) VOL-VCA / VIL-VCU
For whom Operational employees Operational managers / intermediaries
Number of questions 40 multiple-choice 60 multiple-choice
Time 60 minutes 60 minutes
Language level (SSVV) A2 (1F) B1 (2F)
Reading exam Yes, possible No

In short: the VCA basic exam is achievable for most people with targeted preparation. The VCA VOL exam requires more: more questions, more material on leadership and responsibilities, and a higher language level. Therefore, plan more practice time for VOL.

The exact passing threshold and the distribution of questions across topics are detailed in the test matrix of the VCA final and testing terms (ETT). These are managed by the Central Examination Committee VCA and are updated annually — usually slightly. So check the current version via SSVV or your exam center instead of relying on a number from a forum.

VCA Exam for Difficult Learners or Those with Reading Problems

If you have difficulty reading, dyslexia, or another limitation, you need not dread the exam. According to SSVV:

  • For B-VCA, you can receive a reading exam: the computer reads the questions aloud to you
  • An oral exam is not possible
  • For an adapted exam (for example, extra time, dyslexia, or a limitation), SSVV offers various solutions — contact your exam center for this
  • A reading exam or exam in another language costs approximately 20 to 50 euros extra according to SSVV

Arrange this well before your exam date. This way, you can be sure that the exam center can schedule it. You can read more about prices in Costs of the VCA Exam.

VCA Exam Tips: 9 Tips to Pass on Your First Try

  1. Choose the right diploma. B-VCA, VOL-VCA, or VIL-VCU — check with your employer or client.
  2. Learn the concepts first. Start with the technical terms and abbreviations. After that, you will read the questions much faster. An overview of the core material can be found in the VCA Summary.
  3. Practice with the real scope. Start with the free demo (15 questions, no account needed) and then complete at least one full practice exam with 40 questions in 60 minutes (Basic) or 60 questions in 60 minutes (VOL/VIL) via VCA Exam Practice.
  4. Set a timer. Practicing without time pressure gives a distorted view. Afterward, see where you lost time.
  5. Analyze your mistakes by theme. Mistakes with hazardous substances? Working at heights? Repeat specifically instead of rereading everything. A step-by-step plan is available in VCA Practice.
  6. Read the question twice. Especially with "what do you do first?" or "what is not allowed?" one word can make the difference.
  7. Don’t get stuck. If you really don’t know? Choose the best answer and move on; this way, you’ll have time left for the rest.
  8. Read the exam regulations. This states what you can and cannot do during the exam. You can request it from your trainer or the exam center.
  9. Be on time and bring valid ID. Sounds logical, but stress at the beginning costs concentration.

Extra Tip: Also Use the Official SSVV Practice Exam

SSVV offers a practice exam where you can see what the real exam looks like (one practice exam for B-VCA, VOL-VCA, and VIL-VCU). It does not show answers; according to SSVV, knowledge practice is done during training. Want to practice with immediate explanations for each question and an exam timer? You can do that at VCA Exam Practice on Proefexamen VCA.

What If You Still Fail?

Failing is unfortunate, but not a disaster. At the end of the exam, you will receive the provisional result immediately and can review the questions you got wrong. If you did not pass, you can retake the exam through the exam center where you took the exam. SSVV reports that a separate exam costs about 100 euros and that this sometimes includes a free retake — check with your exam center.

Use your mistakes as a practice list. You can read how to quickly re-register in VCA Retake.

Common Misunderstandings

  1. "With experience, you can pass without studying" — the exam tests the rules, not your routine
  2. "A practice exam is the same as the diploma" — only an accredited exam center can register your diploma in the Central Diploma Register (CDR)
  3. "I can take the exam orally" — according to SSVV, this is not possible; a reading exam is available for B-VCA
  4. "VOL is just Basic with more questions" — VOL requires more knowledge about leadership and has a higher language level
  5. "I’ll look up the passing threshold on a forum" — always check the current test matrix via SSVV or your exam center
