What types of questions will you get on the VCA exam?

According to the SSVV assessment matrices 2026, the exam consists of closed questions in four forms:

Question Type What do you need to do?
Multiple choice Select one correct answer from multiple options
Multiple response Select multiple correct answers
Matrix Indicate whether each statement is true or false
Matching Match terms to the correct description

The questions are divided into four chapters. For B-VCA, there are 8 questions on A. preparing, discussing, and inspecting, 19 on B. performing work tasks, 10 on C. controlling specific hazards, and 3 on D. incidents and emergencies. For VOL-VCA, the distribution is 22/20/13/5: more emphasis on preparation and directing others. What exactly has changed in 2026 can be read in VCA exam 2026: what is changing?

Chapter A: Preparing, Discussing, and Inspecting

Question 1 (multiple choice): LMRA

You perform a Last Minute Risk Analysis (LMRA) and see a hazard that you cannot remove yourself. What do you do?

  • A. Continue working cautiously
  • B. Stop and report it to your supervisor
  • C. Grab extra personal protective equipment and continue
  • D. Ask a colleague to keep an eye out

Answer: B. An LMRA is done just before you start. If you cannot control a hazard yourself, you stop and report it. Only when it is safe do you proceed.

Question 2 (multiple choice): agreements on safe work

You start at a new construction site. With whom do you make agreements about safe working before starting?

  • A. With the site manager
  • B. With the supplier of the materials
  • C. With your colleagues from another company
  • D. No one, the agreements are in your contract

Answer: A. SSVV emphasizes in the updated exams that you make agreements about safe work in every industry beforehand. At a construction site, you do this by reporting to the site manager; in the (petro)chemical industry, it often happens with a work permit.

Question 3 (multiple choice): hierarchy of measures

Which measure is preferred according to the occupational hygiene strategy?

  • A. Wearing personal protective equipment
  • B. Eliminating the hazard at the source
  • C. Placing a warning sign
  • D. Limiting working time per person

Answer: B. The order is: first address the source, then collective measures, then individual measures, and only as a last resort personal protective equipment (PPE). PPE is therefore the last resort, not the first choice.

Chapter B: Performing Work Tasks

Question 4 (multiple choice): fall hazard

From what height must measures against falls be taken in the Netherlands?

  • A. 1.5 meters
  • B. 2 meters
  • C. 2.5 meters
  • D. 4 meters

Answer: C. Measures against fall hazards are mandatory from 2.5 meters. If there is a particular hazard, such as falling into water or onto protruding parts, measures also apply at a lower height.

Question 5 (matrix): working safely with a ladder

Indicate whether each statement is true or false.

Statement True False
A ladder should extend about 1 meter above the place where you step off ✔
You maintain three contact points with the ladder while climbing ✔
You may reach far sideways outside the ladder if you are standing firmly ✔
You check the ladder for damage before using it ✔

Explanation: a ladder is primarily intended for going up and down and for short, light work. Reaching far out shifts your center of gravity and is a known cause of falls.

Question 6 (multiple choice): noise

From what noise level are you required to wear hearing protection?

  • A. 70 dB(A)
  • B. 80 dB(A)
  • C. 85 dB(A)
  • D. 95 dB(A)

Answer: C. From 80 dB(A), the employer must provide hearing protection. From 85 dB(A), you are required to wear it.

Question 7 (multiple response): entering a scaffold

What do you check before going up a scaffold? Choose two answers.

  • A. Whether the scaffold is approved (for example, via the scaffold card or inspection label)
  • B. Whether the railings and toe boards are complete
  • C. Whether the scaffold is the same color as the previous one
  • D. Whether there is a ladder from your own company against it

Answer: A and B. You only use a scaffold if it is approved and complete. If something is missing, do not go on it and report it.

Chapter C: Controlling Specific Hazards

Question 8 (matching): hazard pictograms

Match the pictogram to the correct meaning.

Pictogram Meaning
Flame Flammable
Skull and crossbones Acute toxic
Liquid dripping on hand and material Corrosive
Exclamation mark Harmful or irritating

Explanation: these GHS pictograms appear on the packaging of hazardous substances. Always read the label and the safety data sheet for the correct measures.

Question 9 (multiple choice): confined space

Who stays outside a confined space while a colleague works inside?

  • A. No one, if a gas measurement has been made
  • B. A manhole watch (outside watch)
  • C. The site manager, but only at the beginning
  • D. A visitor to the site

Answer: B. The manhole watch keeps in contact with the person working inside and raises the alarm if something goes wrong. They do not go inside to rescue without the proper means.

Question 10 (multiple choice): damaged cable

You see that the extension cord of your drill is damaged. What do you do?

  • A. Tape the damage with insulating tape and continue working
  • B. No longer use the cable and report it
  • C. Continue working because the machine still works
  • D. Open the cable yourself and repair it

Answer: B. Do not use damaged electrical tools or a broken cable. Report it so that an expert can repair or replace it.

Chapter D: Incidents and Emergencies

Question 11 (multiple choice): electric shock

A colleague receives an electric shock and is still touching the cable. What do you do first?

  • A. Grab your colleague and pull them away immediately
  • B. Turn off the power
  • C. Give water
  • D. Take a photo for the report

Answer: B. Do not touch the victim while the power is on, or you will become a victim yourself. First, turn off the power, then provide assistance and raise the alarm.

Question 12 (multiple choice): near miss

Why do you report a near miss?

  • A. To find the guilty party
  • B. To learn from it and prevent recurrence
  • C. Because otherwise you won't get a VCA diploma
  • D. It’s not necessary, no one was injured

Answer: B. A near miss is a warning. By reporting it, the company can take measures before someone actually gets injured.

How to Use VCA Questions and Answers Smartly?

  1. Read the explanation first, not just the answer. The exam often asks the same rule in a different way.
  2. Practice all four question types. Especially matrix and multiple response questions can cost points if you are not used to them.
  3. Practice with a timer. 60 minutes for 40 or 60 questions feels different than reading calmly at home.
  4. Keep track of your wrong answers. Review those topics the next day.
  5. Take a full practice exam before scheduling your exam.

Are there official VCA questions and answers available as a PDF?

SSVV does not provide a list of exam questions and answers. The official practice exams from SSVV show you what the exam system looks like but deliberately do not show answers. According to SSVV, you practice knowledge with the teaching materials from your trainer. Therefore, be cautious with PDFs that promise "the real exam questions": they are often outdated and do not match the updated exams of 2026. You learn more from questions with explanations and practicing in the same format as the exam, such as on VCA exam practice.
